Family Photos with Toddlers in Virginia Beach | Hampton Roads Family Photographer Tips

When it comes to family photos with toddlers… they’re a total wild card. But here’s the thing, most parents don’t realize before their session: That unpredictability? That’s actually where the magic lives.

As a Virginia Beach family photographer - and as a mom currently raising littles myself - I know exactly what it feels like to want time to slow down for just a second. To bottle up the way they reach for your hand, rest their head on your shoulder, or belly laugh when absolutely nothing is funny.

Toddlers aren’t meant to sit still and smile on command - and your family photos don’t need them to.

Here are my best tips to help your family photo session feel relaxed, playful and genuinely enjoyable (yes, even with a toddler involved).

1. Prepare Your Toddler Without the Pressure

The best toddler photo session starts before you even leave the house.

You don’t need to give them a full rundown of what’s about to happen. In fact, less is more. Simply tell them: “We’re going to meet a new friend and play!”

Avoid phrases like:

  • “Be good”

  • “Listen”

  • “Sit still”

  • “Smile nice”

Even with the best intentions, those can create pressure before your session even begins. We want them to feel like this is an adventure - not a performance.

2. Snacks + Naps = Session Success

A well-fed and well-rested toddler makes a world of difference during your family photos. If you're planning a sunset session at the beach (which most of my family sessions are!), try adjusting nap time so they’re not waking up right as we start shooting.

Bring:

  • Mini marshmallows

  • Puffs or crackers

Pro tip: Keep snacks hidden and bring them out only when needed - one piece at a time works wonders when we need a quick reset without ending up with snack containers in every photo.

3. Let Your Toddler Be a Toddler

Wiggly? Running? Climbing? Refusing to stand anywhere near you? Perfect.

My approach to family photography is centered around capturing real connection - not perfectly posed smiles. We’ll let them explore, play, and interact naturally. If they’re not into something we try, we pivot.

If they want to run, we let them run - and scoop them up for a quick cuddle when the moment is right.

All I need is a split second:

  • A laugh

  • A snuggle

  • A hand reaching for yours

  • A quiet moment on your shoulder

Even if the session feels chaotic to you (and honestly, sometimes it will), trust me - those in-between moments are where the magic happens.

4. Bring a Comfort Item (But Hide It at First)

A favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or small toy can be a lifesaver during your session. Keep it tucked away at the beginning so it doesn’t become the main event, but know that we can absolutely bring it out if needed - especially toward the end. And sometimes? Those comfort items end up being the detail you’ll love most years from now.

5. Follow Their Lead and Go With the Flow

Kids feed off your energy. If you're feeling stressed about whether they're cooperating, they will too. But when you relax into the moment and focus on loving your people, everything shifts.

Some of the most meaningful images come from:

  • Quiet hugs

  • Giggles mid-tickle

  • A pouty face tucked into your neck

  • Tiny hands wrapped around yours

Your toddler might laugh, explore, cling, or even have a mini meltdown - and that’s okay. Perfection isn’t what makes a great family photo. Connection is.

Toddler-Friendly Photo Prompts That Work Beautifully at Your Family Session

Instead of posing, we’ll use playful prompts that encourage genuine interaction during your session:

  • Tossing them in the air for belly laughs

  • Kisses and raspberries

  • Letting them pick flowers or explore the dunes

  • Running hand-in-hand along the shoreline

  • Snuggle and tickle breaks

Every toddler brings their own personality to a session - my job is simply to follow their lead and preserve what makes your family yours.
